Like all hyaluronic fillers, Restylane is non-allergenic, and the risk of adverse reactions is incredibly low. However, certain side effects may occur.
Like all needle injections, some pain or discomfort may be experienced during the procedure, but pain can be minimized through the application of a topical anaesthetic if so desired. Most people do not require topical anaesthetic although we encourage it’s use if you are treating your lips.
After your Restylane treatment, you may also experience minor bruising or swelling at the injection sites that may cause some discomfort for anywhere from a few hours to a few days. In a very few cases, nodules or hardness may present at the injection site, but all precautions will be taken to prevent this side effect by your clinician at both the consultation and procedure stages.
Depending on what areas the Restylane is treating, some lumps under the skin might be felt after the procedure. This is particularly common during contouring procedures, where invisible lumps are intended to be placed by the clinician in order to create structural lift. However, if lumps are visible to the naked eye, it is usually temporary, and can be massaged out by the clinician.
Other side effects are rare and can largely be eliminated if the procedure is performed by a trained, experienced clinician in a professional environment. Fillers that are injected too deep within the skin can cause injury to blood vessels or nerve endings, causing painful and potentially permanent damage to the area. Shallow injections, on the other hand, can cause the gel to be visible underneath the skin, causing a bluish appearance around the injection site. Such side effects are most frequently caused by inexperienced or unlicensed clinicians, and it is therefore recommended that all cosmetic procedures be performed in a safe and regulated clinic environment.
As a Restylane treatment is non-surgical and the side effects minimal, you are free to resume your normal schedule, and should see the results almost instantly and lasting anywhere from six months to well over a year.
